Our Defog Service

As with any other part of your house, your windows require regular maintenance in order to function properly and look their best. Though it may seem like a daunting task, taking care of your windows is essential to keeping your home in good condition. Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to keep your windows in top shape.

Our defog service is the perfect solution for your foggy or wet windows and can greatly improve the look of your glass. The defog service is designed to remove the fog that can accumulate on windows.

This fog is caused by seal failure. During the day the space inside the glass unit gets heated up and expands pushing the air out through the cracks in the seals. At night, the airspace contracts and air comes back in with dirt, debris and moisture. This moisture will show usually early in the morning, if not all day.

The defog service is a four-step process.

  1. First, it involves drilling 2 holes, one on the top corner and one on the bottom corner.
  2. We then use a special solution to treat the glass to prevent it from fogging, leaving your windows looking clean and clear (unless there is dry haze that is permanently etched in by the sun and becomes unremovable).
  3. Next, we suction out all the solution and as much moisture as we can.
  4. Lastly, we install these valves/plugs where we drill the holes. Anytime there is moisture, it will vent out through the valves. Your window becomes a breathing window with restored U & R values between 65-90%.

This service is a great way to maintain the clarity of your windows and keep them looking brand new. It saves you about 60% over glass replacement.

How This Window Treatment Works

First, we clean the window to remove any dirt or grime. Next, we apply a special solution to the glass. This solution bonds with the molecules in the glass, filling in any microscopic gaps that may be causing the fogging. Finally, we polish the window to a shine. The result is a clear, fog-free window that will stay looking great for years to come.

  • How do I know if I need a defog service?

Many people assume that defogging their windows is only necessary during the winter months. However, there are a few signs that indicate it may be time to defog your windows, no matter what time of year it is:

    • If you notice streaks, smears or haze on the inside panes of your windows, this means that the surface of the glass unit is no longer sealed.
    • If you notice streaks or smears on your windows, this means that the surface of the glass is no longer smooth.
    • Finally, we can come and do a visual inspection and a air test to see if there is moisture or seal leakage in your windows.

If you notice any of these signs, it's time to defog your home windows. Many people choose to have this service done when they move into a new home, as it can help improve the look of your home and make it easier to keep it clean.

  • Is defog safe?

Defogging windows may seem like a simple task that many can do themselves. However, there are a number of dangers associated with this activity, and it is best left to professionals. To name one, defogging sometimes requires ladders and specialized tools, which must be used carefully. Glass could break.

By hiring a professional window defog technician, you can rest assured that your windows will be defogged safely and efficiently.

  • How often should I defog my windows?

It is generally recommended to defog your windows at the first signs of seal leakage or condensation. This can be done once.

In addition to defogging your windows, it is also important to clean them on a regular basis. Dirt and dust can build up on your windows over time, which can contribute to foggy window buildup. Be sure to clean your windows at least once per week using a mild soap and water solution. For stubborn dirt and grime, you may need to use a glass cleaner.

Defog vs Glass Replacement vs Window Replacement

There are many reasons why you might want to replace your home windows. Whether it’s for aesthetic purposes, or because the current windows are drafty and inefficient, window replacement is a big project that requires a lot of consideration.

One question that homeowners often face is whether to defog their windows, just replace the glass units or replace them entirely. Below, we outline the pros and cons of each service.

  • Defog

    Pros:

    • Less expensive, less invasive,  and less likely to damage windows.
    • Generally quicker than waiting for a replacement window or glass unit.

    Cons:

    • First, defogging only address the issue of condensation on the glass surface – it does not remove the permanent haze etched into the window by sun.
    • Second, defogging only works if the window seal is still intact; if the seal is damaged severely, the window will continue to fog up after being treated.
    • Finally, defogging only restores your U & R value to 65 % to 89% and your seals still are broken. It only becomes a breathing window.
  • Insulated Glass Unit Replacement

    Pros:

    • Less Expensive than new windows.
    • Reduces your carbon footprint and stuff going into landfills.
    • Makes your windows look like new.

    Cons:

    • Takes 4 weeks to come in as opposed to doing defog.
    • Cannot fix broken window frames.
  • Window Replacement

    Pros:

    • Window replacement is a more permanent solution to the problem of foggy windows.
    • Improve the look of your home from the outside.
    • More energy-efficient, helping you to save money on your utility bills.
    • New windows will also eliminate any drafts coming through your old ones, making your home more comfortable year-round.

    Cons:

    • Depending on the size and style of window you choose, a replacement can be quite expensive.
    • You'll also need to factor in the cost of installation, which can add up if you're replacing multiple windows.
    • Replacement windows can be a major project, and it may take some time for your home to adjust to the new windows.
